2 vs 4 vs 6 Epson I3200 Heads: Daily Output, Labour Cost & Who Fits

Cheetah 2-head 60cm DTF printer

When Canadian shops ask “should we buy 2, 4, or 6 Epson I3200 heads?” they are really asking three money questions: how much film can we ship in one day, how many labour hours does that day burn, and are we buying speed we will use — or paying for heads that sit idle.

The printhead itself is the same PrecisionCore I3200 story we cover in I3200 vs I1600 vs F1080. What changes with head count is how much ink you lay per carriage pass, how soon the powder shaker becomes the bottleneck, and whether one operator can keep the line fed. This guide uses planning ranges we walk shops through from Ottawa — not brochure fantasy.

Epson I3200 PrecisionCore printhead used in 2-, 4-, and 6-head DTF printers
Epson I3200 — the same head family; carriage count is what scales your day.

Quick answer

  • 2× I3200 — Best first commercial line. Real daily volume without a six-head payroll or power bill. Typical fit: startups, studio shops, one skilled operator.
  • 4× I3200 — The growth machine. Cuts labour-per-metre when you already fill a 2-head day and still turn work away. Typical fit: wholesale apparel, multi-SKU reorder shops.
  • 6× I3200 — High-volume production when film, powder, press, and people can keep up. Typical fit: contract print houses and shops running long shifts or a second press station.

How to read “speed” without getting lied to

Head count only sets the ceiling. On apparel DTF your real day is limited by:

  • Pass mode & white laydown — 4-pass marketing numbers are not the same as the 6–8 pass quality most shops ship.
  • Powder shaker / dryer tunnel — a fast carriage into a short tunnel just makes expensive waiting.
  • Nesting & RIP discipline — empty film is free speed you paid for and never used.
  • Press labour — printing faster than you can press only grows a WIP pile.

Use the tables below as planning ranges for ~60 cm production printers in normal commercial quality (not race-mode samples). Always confirm the chassis you are quoting — Hermes S60 (2-head), Cheetah dual-I3200 class, and Behemoth Black Edition (6-head) are the Ottawa references we stock and support.

Planning throughput: m² per hour and per day

Assumptions for the table: ~60 cm width, CMYK + white, commercial quality, ~7.5 productive hours in an 8-hour shift (maintenance, colour checks, roll changes). Ranges, not guarantees — your RIP and artwork mix move the needle.

CarriagePlanning print rate~Day output (7.5 h)Rough left-chest equivalents*
2× I3200~8–14 m²/h~60–105 m²~900–1,800 small logos / day
4× I3200~14–22 m²/h~105–165 m²~1,600–2,800 small logos / day
6× I3200~22–30 m²/h~165–225 m²~2,500–3,800 small logos / day

*Left-chest equivalents assume dense nesting of small transfers (~0.06 m² average). Full fronts, sleeves, and sparse gang sheets change the shirt count fast — trust m² first.

Behemoth-class 6-head lines are commonly quoted near the top of that band in 6-pass production when the shaker matches the printer. If the shaker is undersized, a 6-head day collapses toward a 4-head day while you still own six heads.

Labour cost: wages vs square metres

Canadian shop wages vary by city. For planning, use a blended production labour rate (operator + share of press help), not only the printer sticker price.

ScenarioBlended labourOn 2-head (~11 m²/h mid)On 4-head (~18 m²/h mid)On 6-head (~26 m²/h mid)
Lean shop / smaller city$22/h CAD~$2.00 / m²~$1.20 / m²~$0.85 / m²
Typical Ontario production$26/h CAD~$2.35 / m²~$1.45 / m²~$1.00 / m²
Experienced lead + benefits loaded$32/h CAD~$2.90 / m²~$1.80 / m²~$1.25 / m²

That is print labour only. Add pressing, QC, packing, and you still see the same pattern: once you can keep a faster carriage busy, labour per metre drops. If you cannot keep it busy, you paid capital for empty hours.

One-shift money picture (illustrative)

  • 2-head day @ 80 m² with one operator at $26/h → ~$208 labour on the printer shift → ~$2.60/m² before press.
  • 4-head day @ 135 m² with the same wage → ~$208 labour → ~$1.55/m² — more metres for the same payroll hour block.
  • 6-head day @ 195 m² often needs a second person on press/powder sooner → labour rises, but cost per metre still falls if volume is real.

Rule of thumb we use on calls: buy the next head count when you are already turning away work on a full shift, not when a brochure promises “twice as fast.”

Who each solution is suitable for

2× I3200 — suitable when…

  • You are leaving a hobby / F1080-class machine and need commercial quality without over-buying.
  • Daily demand is roughly one solid shift of 2-head output (dozens to low hundreds of garments depending on art size).
  • Floor space, 110/220 V reality, and cash flow matter as much as peak speed.
  • One trained operator will run print + light finishing most days.

Not ideal when you already backlog every week on a dual-head line, or you quote large wholesale programs with hard ship dates.

Start points: Hermes S60, Cheetah dual-I3200 setups, and the compact path on our printers hub.

4× I3200 — suitable when…

  • A 2-head day is full and you still refuse or delay orders.
  • You run recurring wholesale / teamwear where nesting stays dense.
  • You can staff press capacity so the faster printer is not making a film mountain.
  • You want lower labour per metre without jumping straight to six-head power and shaker amperage.

Not ideal when volume is spiky (busy Fridays, quiet Tuesdays) and the extra heads would idle most of the week — lease/finance a 2-head well before you park capital in four.

6× I3200 — suitable when…

  • You are a production house: multi-customer film, long rolls, dedicated powder tunnel.
  • You can feed ~20+ m²/h for most of the shift without starving the RIP or the press.
  • Electrical, HVAC, and finishing labour are already planned (Behemoth-class shakers are not “plug into a wall outlet” toys).
  • Margin depends on labour per metre as much as on winning the job.

Not ideal when you are still learning white maintenance, still outsourcing press work, or still shopping for your first heat press. Six heads multiply bad habits as fast as they multiply good ones.

What else must scale with the heads

  • Film & powder — see the films hub and powder SKUs; a faster head count without stock is theatre.
  • Ink — white burns first; keep UP chemistry matched to I3200 from the inks hub.
  • Presses — Feniks / Geo Knight capacity on the heat presses hub has to track print m².
  • Parts & dampers — I3200 family parts from the parts hub; more heads means more consumables on the shelf.
  • Cash — financing is often smarter than starving film budget to “afford” six heads.

What to do next

  1. Write down last month’s real m² (or shirts × average transfer size) — not your best Tuesday.
  2. Map that to the day-output bands above and circle 2 / 4 / 6.
  3. Open the matching printer on the DTF printers Canada hub.
  4. Call 343-882-6226 for a package quote (printer + shaker + film/ink starter) so labour math includes landed CAD cost.

Notes: Throughput bands are planning estimates for ~60 cm I3200 apparel DTF in commercial pass modes. Shop-floor speed depends on RIP, white policy, shaker length, nesting, and maintenance.
